What is Windows Live Family Safety?

Windows Live Family Safety Official Logo
With Windows Live Family Safety, you can help protect your children by limiting the websites they can view and the people they can contact using Windows Live Messenger,Windows Live Hotmail etc. You can also restrict the time they can spend on the computer, the games they can play, and the programs they can use. You'll have more control over what your children are doing online, without having to peer over their shoulders.
Family Safety has two parts that work together to help you create, manage, and enforceonline safety rules for your family:
• The Family Safety Filter is a free, downloadable program you install on the computers your kids use. It tracks and blocks website access and certain other online activities.
• The Family Safety website is where you go to customize settings for each family member, view activity reports, and respond to requests.

To help prevent your child from seeing certain websites or chatting online, go to theWindows Live Family Safety website and choose an appropriate filtering level for your child. Here's how:
1.On any computer, go to the Family Safety website, and then sign in with a parent or guardian's Windows Live ID.
2.Under the name of the child you want to set web filtering for, click Edit settings.
3.Click Web filtering, select Turn on web filtering, and then move the slider to select a filtering level. The settings range from most restrictive at the top to most permissive at the bottom:

How are web content categories determined?

Windows Live Family Safety groups many websites into categories that are designed to save parents time. Some examples of categories are: Child-friendly, Social networking, and Adult content. Instead of entering individual websites on the Allow or Block lists, parents can rely on categories to control what children can see. If the parent chooses a web filteringsetting that blocks a website category, the child won't have access to sites in that category.
